LED Phototherapy

An LED is a type of diode that turns electrical energy into light. For those that don’t know, a diode is an electrical component that only works in one direction. Basically, an LED is an electrical component that emits light when electricity flows through in one direction, from the Anode (positive side) to the Cathode (negative side). LED is an acronym standing for ‘Light Emitting Diode’. Basically, LEDs are like tiny light bulbs, they just require a lot less power to light up and are much more efficient in producing high light outputs.

LED light therapy uses various wavelengths that correspond to different visible colors or invisible lights. Different lights penetrate the skin at different depths.

  • UV light affects the uppermost layer of your skin.
  • Blue light affects the upper layer of your skin.
  • Green light penetrates deeper than blue light.
  • Yellow light penetrates deeper than green light.
  • Red light travels further into your skin.
  • Near-infrared light penetrates deepest.

Different LED colors do different things.

  • UV LED light therapy is mainly applied to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and chronic eczema based on its ability of enhancing metabolism.
  • Blue LED light therapy can destroy acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes) and be used to control acne.
  • Green LED light therapy is usually used to soothe and calm the skin.
  • Yellow LED light therapy can prevent the formation of freckles and brown spots, and even out skin tone, alleviate sunburns.
  • Red LED light therapy may reduce inflammation and stimulate the production of collagen, a protein responsible for younger-looking skin that diminishes with age.
  • Near-infrared LED light therapy can improve the circulation of oxygen-rich blood in the body, smooth fine lines and wrinkles and reduce inflammation and promotes faster healing.
